Magnet students work with professionals and community partners in selected experiences such as workplace observations, training in and use of professional technology, and opportunities for projects or service learning. Students develop an understanding of the scope and interconnected nature of topics and careers within the theme.įocus: Connection, Specialization, and DevelopmentĪt this level, students build on prior knowledge and experience and become directly involved in fields associated with their magnet theme. Magnet themes are investigated with focus on the types and value of accomplishments of professionals associated with the theme. Magnet programs provide students with instructional continuity, a focus on complex thinking and applied knowledge, and a chance to sample the real-world connection of academics and personal skills to problem-solving and achievement. Technology and real-world applications are infused throughout the curriculum and connected across the academic disciplines. Specialized equipment and learning spaces provide additional support for innovative curricula and instructional approaches. Magnet programs foster literacy, imagination, competency, and creativity in a thematic environment conducive to high achievement. The program offers a robust interdisciplinary curriculum to engage students in a logical progression of knowledge, skills, and application. In the senior year, magnet students culminate their learning experience through an internship or senior project. The academic courses in each magnet meet the same curriculum requirements and standards of regular academic classes and have the opportunity to focus that content on complex thinking and problem-solving in the themed area. Students selecting the magnet programs are making a commitment to continue in their magnet until graduation. Magnet program enrollment begins with an application process during the ninth-grade year with the coursework starting during the tenth-grade year. This exploration will provide both a chance to better understand the themes and learning environments of the magnets and will also give all students an opportunity to consider their own personal interests so that, whether they select a magnet or not, they will begin to think of the choices and opportunities in their futures. Continuing to build on the legacy of excellence established so many years ago, BRMHS is the place to train students for a world filled with challenges but vibrating with promise.Magnet programs at Skyline High School are introduced to all freshman students within the context of their regular academic core classes. The students bring, along with their academic prowess, a wealth of cultural backgrounds and richness of experience, unmatched by any other high school in the district. The facility of more than 360,000 square feet has an amazing program of an impressive library-media center, gymnastics facility, professional track, state-of-the art radio and television studios, along with an amphitheater and two black box theaters. “The legacy of excellence” continues at Baton Rouge Magnet High School. BRMHS has won state championships in a number of these interscholastic sports.

Although students do not have the traditional baseball, basketball, and football programs, students do have the opportunity to participate in field varsity teams for both boys and girls in track, cross country, swimming, golf, bowling, soccer, gymnastics, wrestling, tennis, powerlifting, and volleyball. Competition is at its best at BRMHS, and as it continues the tradition of having students recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation and the Commission on Presidential Scholars. Students who enjoy creative venues can find a vehicle for their talents in both the regular and talented arts programs. With the added benefit of earning early college credits, the school is unique in that it is the only high school in the nation with both streaming AM and FM student-operated stations. The school offers fifty-six Honors, Advanced Placement, and Dual Enrollment courses that motivate students to excel beyond the normal challenge at each grade level. Academically, the school provides the opportunity to build a solid college preparatory background.
